9. Crossroads



By now you should be independent with P.O.M, moving off/stopping, clutch control out of junctions, gear changing and your anticipation, awareness and planning with the road ahead should be getting better, so it’s time to develop your skills with crossroads.

Teaching Strategy

On this lesson your instructor will reduce their instruction as much as needed, on subjects previously covered and give you as much support on the M.S.P.S.G.L/ L.A.D.A routines. These routines will be incorporated when approaching crossroads on major to minor roads and also minor to major roads. We will also be seeking to improve the skills of last lessons anticipation and planning.
The hazard routine and L.A.D.A routines during this lesson and will be broken down by your instructor to a level to suit your driving skills… full talk through then reducing to either prompts or independent.

Lesson aims

The aim of today’s lesson is to learn how to recognising crossroads from a distance and take extra observations when approaching left and right turns from major and minor road while observing the priority of oncoming traffic. During this lesson you will be assessed on  your general drive but your instructor will be giving you as much support as you need. 


Your objective will to be as independent as possible on your general drive but you will be given as much help on the new topic brief, so by the end of your lesson you should be able to negotiate different types of crossroads and improve your road position and use of your mirrors with little or no help from your instructor.
Subject Brief

This lesson you will learn about how to turn into side roads at crossroads and how to emerge from them.

Approaching crossroads to turn into a side road

Approaching and turning into a side road at a crossroads is slightly different from turning into a Side road at a T or a Y junction.
Traffic may emerge from either side of the road and cross your path.  While you have priority you must be prepared to stop if someone foolishly crosses your path. This may also occur when you intend to go straight ahead, which is why you always take extra observations into the side roads of a crossroads before you pass.

Usually vehicles turn nearside to nearside or offside to offside, in this situation although offside to offside is safer because you can see more ahead of you thus seeing any oncoming traffic before turning. Road markings may also dictate which method is used. 
Nearside to nearside

When turning right you may be faced with an oncoming vehicle also wanting to turn right. In this instance neither vehicle has priority.
So let’s break it down, use L.A.D.A and the HAZARD routine on the approach to gain information.
Anticipate and plan ahead with what’s coming towards you. 

Then start the hazard routine….

● Mirrors to the right 
● Signal right 
● Position so you’re close to the centre line
L.A.D.A if it’s safe to continue
● Reduce your Speed
● Gear (2 or 1) on the approach

At this point your point of turn is very important, as if you go too far you are saying you want to do offside to offside, the aim is to stop so you can see the centre of the road ahead off you by using a manhole covers for example.
Offside to offside

Anticipate and plan ahead.

Start the hazard routine as above so use your….
● Mirrors to the right
● Signal right
● Position so you’re close to the centre line

L.A.D.A if it’s safe to continue

● Reduce your Speed
● Gear (2 or 1) on the approach

At this point your point of turn is just past the centre of the road so you can pass each other safely.
Please note this method will only work if there are no vehicles behind you both.
Unmarked Crossroads

At unmarked crossroads no one has priority. If there are no road signs or road markings do not assume that you have the priority. Remember that other drivers may assume they have the right to go. No type of vehicle has priority, but it’s courteous to give way to large vehicles. Also look out in particular for cyclists and motorcyclists.
Emerging at crossroads

If no vehicles are emerging from the opposite side road and the vehicles on the main road are indicating to turn right/ left to emerge into the side road. 
Prepare your vehicle to enter the main road watching the vehicles position and watch their speed to ensure they are not giving a misleading signal and don’t forget to think BIKE.


On the side road you are pulling out of, the vehicle going straight ahead or left have the priority over the car opposite you turning right. However do not assume that the other driver will comply.

When turning right/left or going straight ahead you use the L.A.D.A and the HAZARD routine as normal, so let’s break it down...

L.A.D.A to gain information of what’s coming towards you. Then start the hazard routine…..

● Mirrors (in the direction you are going to go)
● Signal (if a direction signal is needed) 
● Position (alter your road position to suit best).

L.A.D.A if it’s safe to continue

● Speed (reduce your pace to 10/12mph (walking pace or under 5mph crawling pace)
● Gear on the approach (is it an open/closed)

Read the road marking as if it says STOP you have to stop by law.

If the vehicle opposite you wants to turn right you could do the nearside to nearside option if the junction is wide enough.
Reflect and review 

So remember your instructor is there to HELP you, so on your driving lesson if you have any uncertainties or need anything rewording or recapping to make things any clearer, just ask. 

Your training vehicle is fitted with dual controls and if necessary will be used during your lesson. These are here for your safety so we can step in to keep you safe.
