On your 1st driving lesson Provisional driving licence

Prepairing for your first driving lesson!

Make sure you have applied for and received your provisional driving licence from the DVLA.

On your first driving lesson, your instructor will check all the details on your licence and test your eyesight before starting. The eyesight check is simple: you just need to read a number plate from 20 metres, which is about six car lengths.

If you haven’t applied for your provisional licence yet, visit the Gov.uk site to learn more or apply. If you’re unsure about a recent eye test, we strongly recommend visiting your local optician.

Pick up location of your 1st lesson

You’re driving instructor will pick you up from your address or a place agreed on initial booking conversation.

Introduction

Your instructor will greet you and drive you to suitable location for your 1st lesson, your instructor will know your nervous and they will put you at ease.

Reading a number plate

Before you start your driving lesson your driving instructor will ask to see your provisional driving licence and ask you to read a number plate from 20m.

M.S.M routine/ or other skills

On the way to the location, they might discuss skills like using M.S.M (mirror, signal, manoeuvre), applying the pull/push method when steering the wheel, or identifying reference points at the bottom of the windscreen in front. (So why not take a look at a few lesson briefs to get you understanding the M.S.M & pull/push).
