Before starting your lessons

On your first lesson

For your first lesson, make sure you’re familiar with highway code rules 90 to 100.

Introduction

Before beginning your driving lessons, make sure you have a valid provisional driving licence (category B), are physically fit, and can read a car’s number plate from about six car lengths away—20 metres for the new-style plates. These new plates were introduced on 1 September 2001.

When applying for your driving licence from the DVLA, you should inform them if you wear glasses or contact lenses, or if you have any visual condition affecting both eyes (excluding short or long sight and colour blindness). You should also declare any condition affecting your vision, such as having sight in only one eye. Additionally, if you’ve had sight correction surgery, make sure to mention this when applying for your provisional licence.

PROVISIONAL DRIVING LICENCE

During your first lesson, your driving instructor will verify that your provisional licence is valid (if it isn’t, the lesson cannot continue) and check your eyesight by having you read a number plate. They will then drive you to a safe location and give you a briefing on the following topics, which may also take place at the training location:

The cockpit drill.

An introduction to the main hand and foot controls of the vehicle.

Instructions on how to move off and stop your training vehicle with full control.
