A. Brakes should not feel spongy or slack:- This indicates your brake fluid is low.
A. Brakes should be tested as you set off.
A. When breaking your vehicle should not pull to one side as this shows your brakes are out of alignment (one of your brakes has seized up).
Q 2. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
A. By ether looking in your vehicles manufacturer’s guide or the information could be placed in the door pillar or fuel cap area.
A. To check the pressures use a reliable pressure gauge and adjust pressures when tyres are cold with ether a foot pump or a compressor, not forgetting the spare tyre. Replace all valve caps.
Q 3. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
A. The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.
Note: Some restraints might not be adjustable.
Q.4. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
A. Ensure there are no cuts and bulges in the tyre wall.
A. The tyres depth should be 1.6 across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre, including around the entire outer circumference of the tyre.
Q 5. Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
A. You need to explain how you operate the headlight switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).
Q 6. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
A. The warning light should illuminate on the dashboard if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.
Q 7. Tell me how you would check the direction indicators are working.
You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
A. Explain how you would operate the indicator switch (turn on ignition if necessary), and then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).
A. Or you would operate the indicator switch to the left & right to ensure the indicator rhythm is the normal tempo (turn on ignition if necessary).
Q 8. Tell me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car.
A. You can reverse your vehicle and look at reflections in windows /garage doors.
A. You can also ask someone to help.
Q 9. Tell me how you would check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly.
Before starting a journey, 2 simple checks can be made:-
1. While you start the engine put gentle pressure on the steering wheel, the steering wheel should feel easy to move (light). If the wheel is hard to move (heavy) this is the indication that the power-assisted steering system is not working properly.
2. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning or not.
Q 10. Tell me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would need to put it/them on.
You don’t need to exit the vehicle.
A. Check warning light ('s) are on your dash board.
A. Activate your fog lights if visibility is 100 meters or less. (turn on headlights & turn the ignition if necessary).
Q 11. Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on.
A. Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary) the green dip light will change blue main beam light.
*On the Corsa pull the indicator switch towards you to turn on and pull it towards you to turn off.
Q 12. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
A. Identify the dipstick/oil level indicator & describe how to check the oil level against the minimum & maximum markers.
Top up to correct level then the engine is cold & before a long journey.
Q 13. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.
A. Identify the high & low level markings on engine coolant/header tank (radiator filler cap)
A. Top up to correct level then the engine is cold & before a long journey.
Q 14. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Identify reservoir, check level against high and low markings.

You need to open the bonnet and tell the examiner how you’d do the check if you’re asked question 12, 13 or 14.

These questions will be asked when you are driving on your driving test, however if you can not answer the examiner will pull you up on the left & ask you again.
Q. When it’s safe to do
so, can you show me how you wash & clean the front windscreen?
A. Normally the
windscreen wiper stalk is on the right hand side of your
steering wheel.
A. You would pull it towards to operate it and push it away to turn it off.
*The Corsa you pull it towards you.
Q. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you wash & clean the rear windscreen?
A. Normally the windscreen wiper stalk is on the right hand side of your steering wheel.
A. You would either twist the end of the stalk or push it away to operate it.
*The Corsa you push the stalk away from you.
(Same picture as above).
Q. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you would switch on your dipped headlights?
A. Normally the dipped stalk is on the left hand side of your steering wheel.
A. You would pull it towards to operate it, also pull it towards you to deactivate.
Note: Your dipped light will only stay on when if your head lights are on.
Q. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you would set the rear
demister?
A. The rear demister is found on the left hand side normally below the stereo.
A. The rear demister is normally on a 5 minuet timer.
Q. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you would open & close the
drivers front window?
A. The window switch could be on the driver’s door or near the centre console near your handbrake.
*On the Corsa the window opener is on the drivers door.
Q. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you would operate the horn?
A. The horn is normally on the centre of your steering wheel.
Your instructor will show you where all the controls are as all vehicles controls and bonnet catches are all in different places.
