The two second rule, Position to holding back, overtaking & adequate clearance
Introduction On today’s lesson you and your driving instructor have agreed to learn the skill of: -
- The two second rule
- The holding back position
- Overtaking parked and slower moving vehicles
- Leaving adequate clearance when overtaking
Fundamental skill
Mastering the holding back position in a nursery area means knowing when to slow down or stop for an oncoming vehicle when there are stationary parked cars on your side of the road. Once it’s safe, overtake the parked vehicle while leaving the correct amount of clearance, and always maintain the two-second rule throughout the driving lesson.
Goal (aim) Understanding how to put previous lesson topics into today’s lesson plan
• Pull-push method of steering
• Good use of your biting point (using clutch control)
• Using Points of turns on corners when turning left, right and emerging
Your driving instructor will assess your use of M.S.M routine skills
Head – To look where you are going
Hands – Hands to guide your training vehicle in the direction you want to go
Feet – Your feet to co-ordinate your accelerator, brake and clutch pedals so you are in full control
Risk responsibility's
You and your instructor will agree the support needed and which areas on the start of your lesson: -
• Full talk through
• Prompt
• Independent
This information is so important to ensure that you the student and your instructor understands what part of the (risk) responsibility in the training vehicle you are taking control off and at what help you are in need from your instructor.
Your objective is to drive client-centred on each lesson and increasing your responsibility on each lesson and be in full control of all situations you are faced with.
For example: - The cock pit drill, hand/foot controls/ moving off/stopping using M.S.M should be getting independent the difficult part will be to meeting traffic and if necessary, stop/give way and move on when safe.
Let’s do the cockpit drill (independently).
Risk management
On most roads these days there are far more vehicles on the road not to mention Ebikes/scooter.
It is your objective to make yourself a better driver as you have to: -
- Manage oncoming risks to your vehicle and deal with any consequence’s.
- Make the correct decision as you are preventing damage or worse…
Today you will learn a new skill of Look, Assess, Decide & Act safely by ether Slowing down, keeping the same path or stop and give way. As there will be one off the 3 outcomes (discussed later on this brief).
