Use of the centre white line
When driving with no parked vehicle on the left-hand side of the road aim to drive 1/2metre from the kerb. Just by looking in your offside wing mirror (driver’s side) you will see the white centre line (picture below). A B A – Vehicle in normal driving position When driving down a standard size road you will see that the kerb edge is just left of the centre of the bottom of the window, the centre line will be in the bottom right-hand side of the bottom of the window. Looking in the drivers wing mirror (if your mirrors are set correctly) you will see the centre line roughly in the middle of your mirror. B – Vehicle overtaking a parked vehicle Once you have looked, assessed and decided it is safe to overtake a parked vehicle you will have to move your road position over the centre white line go onto the wrong side of the road. Visually the centre line will move across to the bottom right of the wind the windscreen to the bottom middle of the bottom of the wind screen. The kerb on the other side of the road will look its now running in the bottom of the wind screen where the red arrow was before you started to overtake. Overtaking is a high risk if you Mis-judge an oncoming vehicle Speed and distance, as you will ether slow down the oncoming vehicle and this could have a knock-on effect with the vehicles behind them. Or if they are not paying attention this will be a very messy outcome. Planning effectively will be the only successful outcome.
